CITY OF BASTROP POLICE DEPARTMENT The Citizens Police Academy was first started in October of 1997 under the direction of Chief Bill Anderson and it is grown beyond our wildest expectations. Since then the academy has graduated more than 100 participants, all, of whom came away with better and stronger understanding of our police department and what it does for the community. The academy consists of sixteen class room hour over a four-day period. Classes will begin Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and conclude at 9:30 p.m. each Thursday for eight weeks. You will hear first hand, the duties and responsibilities of our patrol officers, criminal investigators, school resource officers, animal control and much more. Academy participants will tour the Bastrop County Jail and the 911 dispatch center. Speakers are current members of the department with extensive training and knowledge in their respective field of expertise, as well as members of the other agencies such as the Family Crisis and Children Advocacy Center. All graduates of the academy are encouraged to become an active member of the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association. This excellent police support group has assisted the department in times of disaster and other community service projects. All alumni's members are eligible for the police ride along program, this exciting adventure takes you into the streets of our community where you learn first hand the trials and tribulations of becoming a Bastrop police officer. BASTROP POLICE DEPARTMENT 1. Applicants must be twenty one years of age or older. 2. Applicants can not have any convictions or outstanding cases of the following: Felony of any grade, Class A Misdemeanor, or a Class B Misdemeanor. The applicant will be required to have outstanding Capias Pro Fine Warrants (Outstanding unpaid traffic tickets), paid in full prior to the beginning of the course. Criminal History checks will be conducted on all applicants. 3. Applicants must live or work in the Bastrop area. 4. The course is scheduled for eight weeks. The classes will be held on Thursday evenings, from 7:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. beginning Sept. 4, 2008. The Applicant is required to attend all courses to be eligible for graduation. However, if an applicant misses a particular course, he or she may attend the next academy for the course that they have missed. Then the applicant will be eligible to graduate with the following academy. 5. Any participant who disrupts the class or disrupt the course of its objectives will be asked to dismiss themselves from the particular course. Continuation for the course will be handled on a case by case event. The Chief of Police will be notified of any dismissals from the program and the decision of the Chief of Police is final. 6. All participants, instructors, and volunteers will treat all persons with the due respect and courtesy. 7. Causal dress is selected for the course. Any profane of inappropriate T-shirts, hats, of logos are forbidden. 8. This program is a community awareness program that is sponsored by the Bastrop Police Department. The Citizen Police Academy does not provide training required by the State of Texas for any participant to become a police officer, obtain a Concealed Handgun permit, or achieve any license that is regulated by the State of Texas. |
